A key component of the UW Immunology experience is frequent seminars and events. From annual events such as the department retreat to regular research seminars, gatherings and activities enrich life for the UW Immunology community. Please see the UW Immunology calendar for up-to-dates listings of all seminars, events, and university dates of note.
The Department of Immunology holds seminars by invited lecturers from throughout the United States as well as from international guests to discuss the latest advances in immunological research. Seminars are held on Mondays at 3:30 pm in various Health Sciences lecture halls during the academic year. These events are open the UW community.
Please see the UW Immunology calendar for this month’s speakers
Research in Progress (RIP)
The Department of Immunology presents weekly graduate students and postdoctoral lectures. Each week a graduate student and a postdoctoral fellow present their current research activities and findings, with opportunity for the attendees to ask questions. Research in Progress is held on Wednesdays at 4:00 pm during the academic year.
Please see the UW Immunology calendar for upcoming RIP presenters.
Department Annual Retreat
The Department of Immunology holds an annual two-day retreat second Monday and Tuesday in September prior to the beginning of every academic year. The retreat provides an opportunity for faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and staff to share their ongoing research through formal scientific presentations and poster sessions. The annual Sandra L. Clark Lecture is also given during the annual retreat by a speaker selected by the graduate students.
The 2013 retreat is Monday and Tuesday, September 9 and 10, at Fort Worden Conference Center in Port Townsend.
Note: The annual retreat is historically held on the Monday and Tuesday following Labor Day.
Since 1985, the Russell S. and Rae Weiser Endowed Lecture has featured a leading immunological investigator during the academic year as part of the Immunology seminar series. In 2011, the Weiser Lecturer is Max D. Cooper, Ph.D., Professor, Departments of Pediatrics, Microbiology and Pathology, Emory University.
Please consult the UW Immunology calendar for the annual lecturer and date of this event, which occurs in the early spring each academic year.
The Sandra L. Clark Immunology Education Fund provides support for a lecture presented at the annual department retreat, as well as an award for best poster at the retreat. Graduate students in the Department of Immunology select the speaker each year. The lecturer for 2011 was Herbert “Skip” Virgin, MD, Ph.D., Edward Mallinckrodt Professor and Chair, Pathology and Immunology, Washington University in St. Louis.
Please consult the UW Immunology calendar for information on the upcoming speaker presenting during the annual department retreat.
