Why I chose UW Immunology

I chose UW Immunology because I knew I would receive excellent mentorship from the many exciting young PIs, perform cutting-edge basic immunology research, create close bonds through the small class sizes, all while leading a balanced lifestyle. As a life-long East-coaster, I was also drawn to the west coast and the spectacular outdoors surrounding Seattle.

Activities and Interests

I love the size of Seattle! It has the food, music, and culture of a big city with a size and density that feels much smaller. I live on the border of Wallingford and Fremont neighborhoods in a single-family house-type area with plenty of parks, breweries, restaurants, bars, and music venues in walking distance, and yet I’m still only a 6 minute drive, 20 minute bus, or 20 minute bike ride away from the lab. On the weekends I usually get out of Seattle for at least a day trip to go hiking, biking, or skiing. The access to and abundance and quality of outdoor opportunities in Washington is incredible.

Advice from me

It’s important to be happy where you live and to treat graduate school as a marathon, not a sprint. Also, the rain isn’t so bad, you just need to find a winter activity!

More about me

In the Moltke lab we study the the Type 2 immune response to parasitic worms and allergens, focusing on the role of epithelial tuft cells in the sensing and coordination of the response. In particular, I study the function of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, produced by tuft cells in the context of helminth and protist infection.
